Not so ugly. Today was Day 1 of the 3 Day Cleanse part of the 30 Day Challenge. It was a bit of a rude awakening to my mind when I entered the kitchen and remembered I would not be heating up my daily home-made banana-oatmeal-flax-seed breakfast cookie. I literally eat one every single day of the week unless I am not at home. Accompanied by a steaming cup of English Breakfast tea and I am set for the morning. Not today.

I woke up my son and then headed over to my binder which I left open to Day 1 instructions knowing I would need no excuses. Laid out in front of the binder was the apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper, lemon and a coffee mug. I was to put the 3 ingredients in a cup of warm water, drink it down and let the detox begin. Other than being a bit too lemony for my liking it was too bad.

Making my son’s lunch proved to be a little bit distressing. I realize I typically, okay, reality, every single day I lick the peanut butter knife which just so happens to be full of peanut butter before tossing it in the sink. I love peanut butter. Not today. Sandwich made, I sliced his apple. Problem #3. The apples are so large, I slice up 2/3 and put in his lunch and always finish the final 3rd myself. Not today. Lunch made and quickly stashed in his backpack. I made my breakfast smoothie.

As I sit here typing this at 8:48 PM, a whopping 15 hours later, I cannot for the life of me remember what was in the breakfast smoothie. Let’s just say it wasn’t impressionable. I didn’t hate it. I didn’t love it. At least it didn’t make me gag, as I saw some women post on the Facebook page. In fact, nothing I drank today turned out to be all that bad, in my opinion.

I had made a plan that today would be de-clutter the master bedroom closet day, thus I would be occupied. It worked! I spent a couple hours sorting, folding, packing up to donate, folding and re-folding, until all items were safely in the spot I wanted them in. About halfway through my stomach began grumbling as the liquid smoothie had long since made it’s way further down the digestion chain. I distracted myself with 20 oz of water, 1/4th may daily requirement.

Between drinking water, a cup of herbal tea, a cup of dandelion detox tea, a shower, and a run to the bank and post office, I kept my mind off of food. That was until I had to pop into the grocery store to pick up bagels and cream cheese for my wonderful son. I must truly love him. It was 12:00 noon and the Chinese take-out in the deli was going strong. Talk about wanting to eat everything in and out of sight! Aye Caramba!

I refrained from purchasing or sampling anything other than the items I came in for. Home Sweet Home, my refuge. I opened the day and was immediately accosted by the smells of home-made chili wafting through the air. My honey was home and had heated up the leftovers I have taken out of the freezer for him. Oh boy. Now nearing 1:00 PM, I made my lunch time smoothie. I was a little disappointed that it did not have any protein in it. The taste wasn’t bad. Although the name a bit deceiving. Pina Colada? It tasted more like cucumber salad. Thankfully I like cucumbers.

More water in take, a cup of dandelion detox tea, and I was looking good for the day. 3:00 PM arrived and it was time to pick my son up. I envisioned coming back to an afternoon snack. I looked at the schedule and to my dismay there was no afternoon snack. No Snack? On a regular day when I eat a normal lunch, I am prone to having a bowl of home-made popcorn in the afternoon. A bowl. Like a big stainless steel mix your batch of cookie dough bowl. All to myself. Not today.

More water. A few cups of tea to warm me up. I was feeling quite chilled all afternoon.

5:30 PM – The boys headed off to goalie practice and I thought about eating my smoothie while they were away. Instead I once again found a way to occupy myself. Paid some bills, organized some files, and returned a couple of calls. Next thing I new they were on their way home.

I cooked them grilled cheese sandwiches and creamy red pepper tomato soup. As much as I wanted a slice of cheese, I refrained. Not even a crumb of bread. Not today.

I made my dinner smoothie which turned out to be very filling. It had half an avocado, 1 banana, Greek yogurt, spinach, Cacoa (unsweetened pure chocolate), water and ice. Found myself wishing I had drank that one for lunch. I had read several Facebook posts that said it left something to be desired as the chocolate was anything but sweet of course. I decided to make a small splurge and squeezed in just a dash of 100% pure maple syrup. An item that we will be putting in some of our meals after the cleanse. It was good. Not sweet, but good.

Now I am snuggled in bed with a hot cup a tea. Not my usual bourbon. Not today.
